AI - a big subject - my un-artificial intelligence has serious problems even understanding what it is!
In my lifetime the JCB did away with many jobs that have never been replaced, same happened when the coal mines were closed, I could go on and on.
Increasingly, in my view, the gap between rich and poor has widened, I can see no end to that. My suspicion is at AI will transfer many from the 'rich' category to the poor, with ever more power going to a shrinking number of people, the size of the poor population will grow, ie most people will be worse off.
My fear for the universal wage is that it will be set at the lowest possible level, just high enough to ward off social unrest.
As I have said many times before, I think that this is a spiritual challenge.
History seems to show that the human race has seldom risen to the challenge, and when individuals or groups have done so the long-term impact has been limited.
Incidentally, AI has its benefits, for me I can submit an Excel formula that isn't working into Co-pilot, and it tells me not only what is wrong with my formula but also corrects it! It's pretty good at that. Whereas a Google search will provide help at a training level, all too often doesn't understand my question, and gives a generic answer that takes unpacking.
No doubt AI is with us to stay; I hope that huge effort and commitment will be put into the consequent social issues it will bring.
By 'addressing' I mean actually, doing the business, not just talking about it and making policies.
My fear is that AI is moving so fast that the body politic will be overtaken.
I don't 'buy' the 'this is another cyclic change that we will eventually come through'. Not altogether sure that that is the historic norm anyway. Possibly it is an irregular Sine curve that spends most, if not all, of its life below the 'X'-axis. It is almost always bad with periods when it gets less bad.
Incidentally, the 'Humans' BBC series took the line that bad times brought about good, eg the ice age drove off the wild animals that the humans used for food, in consequence they learnt to grow crops.
It is also true that when we as individuals encounter challenges they bring about opportunity for individual growth - plenty in scripture on that!
In summary, will AI be actively used as a tool to bring about social justice?
