Introduction
This is a massive area, so we need to break it down into manageable chunks ...
Definition
Can anybody find a workable definition of gender equality?
Culture
Most culture-shaping activity through the centuries has been undertaken by men. This is partly because they had the opportunity, and partly because the contributions of women have consistently been ignored and under-valued.
Domestic Violence
- Perhaps people will take it more seriously when they recognize that most terrorism begins with domestic violence.
Male Violence
- There is a great deal in the media about male violence, but it is all about the injustice of male violence against women. While this is clearly wrong, and an issue which needs to be addressed, some of the conversation seems to be missing the point that, most of the time, the victims of male violence are males: they are three times more likely to die from 'intentional injuries' than women (see the WHO 2021 statistics).
Me Too
- This is possibly one of the most significant cultural developments in recent years. Jill Filipovic has published (what seems to be!) a balanced assessment of the movement in Slate, "The Horrible Abuse Allegations Against Diddy Reveal the Legacy - and Limits - of #MeToo".
Medicine
Women are discriminated against medically in a variety of ways.
- Excluding women from clinical trials is hurting our health
- We Don’t Have Enough Women in Clinical Trials
- Numerous medical conditions are routinely misdiagnosed in women
- Neuroscientists are ignoring the differences between the sexes when they study the brain.
- How medicine erased Black women from a ‘white man’s disease’
