People argue about the purpose of prison (punishment, rehabilitation, deterrence...)
It is clear that prisons are validly described as 'univsersities of crime' - being sent to prison increases the probability of the individual being sent back to prison, and it is the ideal opportunity for one generation of criminals to teach the next generation how not to get caught.
Prisons are violent places, but violence in UK prisons could be cut by 30% simply by improving the nutritional quality of prison food.
