Introduction

• The Rule of Law.  It is arguable that the fundamental change which took place between the ancient world and the modern world was the transition from the rule of a dictator to the rule of law.
• Education: Informing or Forming?  Education is clearly an important activity, so we probably should think more clearly about its purpose - what is education for?  As the title suggests, there seems to be two quite different (and, at times, mutually opposed) aims: are we seeking to inform people, or helping to form them?
